OBS Setup Guide: Scenes, Sources and Settings That Just Work

OBS is powerful but intimidating. This plain-English setup gets you a clean, stable stream without the overwhelm.

OBS Studio is the free software behind a huge share of professional-looking streams — and it can feel overwhelming the first time you open it. This guide cuts through the noise to the settings and habits that actually matter.

Think in scenes

A scene is a saved layout of what's on screen. Build a few — "Starting Soon," "Live," "Be Right Back," and "Ending" — so you can switch cleanly instead of scrambling. Good scenes make a small channel look organised and intentional from day one.

Add sources in order

Within each scene, add your sources: your game or screen capture, your webcam, overlays, and alerts. Layer them from back to front and lock them once positioned so you don't nudge things mid-stream. Keep it simple — a clean two- or three-source scene beats a cluttered one.

Match settings to your upload speed

The single most common mistake is streaming at a higher bitrate than your connection can handle, causing dropped frames. Test your upload speed and set your bitrate comfortably below it. For most home connections, 1080p at a moderate bitrate is smoother and better-looking than a choppy max-quality stream.

Get audio right

Set up separate audio tracks for your mic and desktop, and watch your levels so your voice sits clearly above the game. Add a noise gate and a light compressor if your mic picks up background noise. Clean, balanced audio is what viewers notice most.

Do a private test first

Before going public, run a short test recording or private stream. Check that your capture works, your mic is clear, your alerts fire, and nothing sensitive is on screen. Two minutes of testing saves you an embarrassing first impression.

Start with a few solid scenes, sane settings and clean audio, then add polish over time. OBS rewards a calm, incremental setup far more than trying to do everything at once.
